Passport to Folk Art: Kenya

Take an incredible journey to the heart of Kenya to meet artisan groups and take in the majesty of East African wildlife. This 10 day journey includes one-on-one time with a wide range of artists, as well as time on the plains of Africa where we will sit with elephants at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro and watch lions roam in the tall grasses of the Masai Mara.

4 days/nights in Nairobi visiting a range of talented artisan groups including Kitengala Glass Blowers, Ocean Sole Workshop, Tharaka Women’s Weaving Group, Folk Market artisan Phoebe Lasoi Salau, as well as visiting other elegant Kenyan artisan centers and both historic and innovative restaurants throughout the city
3 days/nights in Amboseli National Park visiting former Folk Art Market Artisan group Beads of Esiteti, a traditional Maasai women’s beading group located at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Your time with them will include an immersive experience in their traditional village learning about their group and the impact it has made on their lives, as well as visiting the local Esiteti Primary School and spending time with the children. Each morning and evening you’ll head out on safari to view the famous Amboseli elephants and other African wildlife that fills this spectacular National Park
3 days/nights in the Masai Mara visiting Basecamp Maasai beading group and other artisan groups in the regions as well as daily safaris in this famous National Park that is known for its incredible big cat population and endless open plains that are filled with an abundance of wildlife

3 days/nights on the East African island of Lamu, a UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its well-preserved Swahili culture and architecture. Lamu will beguile you with its charm and take you back in time with old world Arabic architecture, ancient wooden dhow boats, and tropical warm waters. You’ll explore this historic town that is filled with charm, incredible artisan groups, and scrumptious seafood filled cafes along the ancient streets.
